Teaching our future generation about respecting our environment is not just our responsibility but the need too. Every gesture towards saving the environment is important- no matter however small it is. As a parent, your first step should be making the most aware decisions and contributing towards nature and set an example for your children. Recycling and reusing should be made a part of their lifestyle and not just a responsibility. Some of the other tips for activating eco-friendly concerns in children are:
1.Help them to segregate: Apart from keeping separate bins for different sorts of waste, you need to manually teach your children to use them effectively. Use different colours or put labels to help them decide what to put where.
2.Save fuel: Instead of taking your children to faraway places, explore your neighbourhood. Try cycling which is not only a healthy sport but is also eco-friendly. Take a walk to the nearest grocery instead of taking a car and encourage your children to do the same.
3.Save electricity: Make sure that your children notice you’re every effort to save electricity. Encourage them to switch off all appliances instead of putting them in standby mode, when not in use. Switch off the lights while leaving the room is also a habit that children should have.
4.Switch to cloth bags: Plastic bags are a hazard to the environment. Dump them and use a paper or cloth bag for all your shopping. When you step out for shopping, don’t forget to carry the bag with you.
5.Recycled paper: Get your children recycled stationery and help them appreciate that this small gesture can easily save tons of paper and a dozen trees. Help them feel proud of this act.
6.Appreciate nature: Make occasional outings to natural sites around your city. Let the children explore the beauty of nature and learn its importance. Tell them about different species of birds and animals present and their importance to the natural habitat.
Help your children respect life and nature. Encourage them to grow plants in your courtyard or the local park and help them get attached to it. Unless and until you take it on your shoulders, it is extremely difficult for children to become environmentally responsible.
